Giants of the North – Whale Watching in Húsavík

Some experiences stay with you long after the journey ends. For me, whale watching from Húsavík was one of those moments.

Our day began with a scenic drive from Akureyri through the green valleys of northern Iceland to the small coastal town of Húsavík, often called the whale-watching capital of Iceland. From there, we boarded a traditional wooden boat and headed into Skjálfandi Bay, hoping to encounter some of the ocean’s most magnificent inhabitants. The bay is known for its rich marine life and is home to humpback whales, minke whales, dolphins, puffins, and many other seabirds.

Nothing quite prepares you for the first sight of a whale surfacing beside the boat. In a world that often moves too fast, these moments felt timeless. Watching these gentle giants emerge from the cold North Atlantic reminded me how extraordinary our planet really is. There was no need for words—just quiet admiration and a sense of privilege to witness wildlife in its natural habitat.

After returning to shore, we visited the Whale Museum in Húsavík, where we learned more about the lives and migration patterns of these remarkable creatures. The day concluded with a stop at the spectacular Goðafoss, the „Waterfall of the Gods,“ whose powerful cascades provided a fitting finale to an unforgettable excursion.

Yet what stayed with me most was not the waterfall or even the photographs. It was the realization of how connected and fragile the natural world is. Seeing these animals in their environment was a reminder that places like Iceland are more than beautiful destinations—they are ecosystems worth protecting.

The photographs from this day are more than travel memories. They are a celebration of wildlife, wonder, and the rare privilege of sharing a small moment with the giants of the North.
